“City Center –Rethinking Downtown”
Historically, a city’s downtown core has been the community’s cultural and economic center, expressing shared values and aspirations. Today, however, many downtowns represent a community’s social and economic distress.
Nan Laurence, a senior planner for the City of Eugene, will explore the changing character of downtown activities, urban forms, and public spaces and lead participants in a conversation about how downtowns can represent a community’s ideals and aspirations.
The forum will be held at the Eagles Nest Food & Spirits on February 22, 2012 at 6 p.m. There is limited seating of 35, and tickets can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce for $10, this will include a light dinner and non-alcoholic beverage.

A quick update on some upcoming events:
IRISH DAYS ~The Soroptimist Dinner will be Friday, March 16th.
Saturday, March 17th will be the annual Irish Days Celebration.
Stay tuned for more information!

What the Chambers been up to:
The Chamber marketed Lake County at the annual International Sportsman Expo in Sacramento this month. 50,000 sports minded people typically attend this event. The Lodge at Summer Lake donated a nights stay with dinner as a raffle prize for Lake County and Willow Springs Guest Ranch provided a 50% off deal.
We’ve marketed our restaurants, motels, B&B’s guest ranches and all facilities that can accommodate small conferences and will be featured in the March edition of Business Association News.
Our golf courses will be featured in a special golf digest across the state.
We will be featured in a Southern Oregon Culinary Tour along with our Saturday Market .
We’re working with the Fremont Highlanders and Hunters Hot Springs with packages to be used at fundraisers in Bend. And so much more...

The net proceeds from the Southwest Airline tickets, that were one of the auction items at this years Gala, will go to a well deserving non-profit group, CASA. Court Appointed Special Advocates work as the “voice” of the child and the “eyes and the ears” of the judge in court for children who have entered state foster care.

A Message from the Director
All I can say is “WOW”. The turnout for our 66th Annual Chamber Awards Gala was awesome, a sold out crowd and so many deserving citizens. To have a crowd like that to honor our unsung hero’s was so positive, so encouraging and so Lake County. We have so many volunteers in Lake County, so many people who give their time and resources to keep this county going, some who even volunteer as advocates for children and animals. That’s what it takes, community spirit, working together to make things happen.
So many people were responsible for making this event a success; The Decorating Committee ~ Suzanne Steward, Ceci Farmen, Susan Frank, Anita Spence and Bev Hills. Bob Lund for the loan of his antique decoys, Double Eagle Mining for the loan of the natural “bling” their sunstones, Shirin Sabin for the loan of her beautiful fabrics. Bev & Darryl Bender donated the plaques for our awards, Toni Bailie , The Eagles Nest and El Aquila Real for donating the gifts for our award winners. Suzie Cahill for the beautiful piano music, so classy! Thanks to all those who donated for our live auction and raffle items. A big thanks and shout out to my assistant, Jennie Steward who made the programs, tickets and signs, she is the best!
I’d also like to take this time to thank our people in the lodging industry. The portion of the lodger’s tax that we receive makes up approximately 50% of our budget. I think our motels, bed and breakfasts and resorts do a great job, without them we couldn’t survive.
I’d like to thank those who serve on our event committees, without them we couldn’t pull off these events. And I’d really like to thank our Chamber Members. Your membership dues helps to pay the insurance for the events, the advertising for the events and helps us to market Lake County across the state and outside of the state. We need to continue to work towards making our county a place where our children can come back and work; our grandchildren can be raised here with extended family. We can’t afford to lose one more store, mill, restaurant, or establishment. If you’re not a member I would encourage you to join the Chamber. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

Pacific Power – February 2012
Save Now: Low-Cost Ways to Reduce Energy Use
Source: Pacific Power and Questline
The following low- and no-cost energy-saving tips can help your business lower energy use and boost your bottom line.
? Minimize artificial lighting – Turn off lights in unoccupied areas. Use occupancy sensors or label light switches so employees know which lights to turn off.
? Power down electronic equipment – A single computer and monitor left on overnight and on weekends can add $30 or more to your annual energy bill. Some equipment, including printers and copiers, should have their power management features enabled or be turned off when not in use.
? Control heating and air conditioning – Reducing heating temperatures or increasing cooling temperatures by one or two degrees can cut heating and cooling bills by 8 percent or more, according to the U. S. Department of Energy.
? Measure and record energy use – Walk around your facility to identify inefficient equipment and processes that are wasting energy. This information can be useful in developing an action plan for reducing energy consumption. Once your plan is in place, measure and record your energy use to determine if your energy-saving efforts are working.
? Get employees involved - You may want to appoint an employee as an energy champion to gather information on improving efficiency and to ensure that equipment and machinery are properly maintained.
